Moston Campus, Manchester College

Location: Moston, Manchester
Client: OneManchester
Client’s Administrator: Arcus Consulting
Value: £450,000
Timescale: November 2020 to July 2021
Scope: The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of the Moston Campus of Manchester College.

Project Background

The project consisted of the demolition of the Moston Campus of Manchester College.  The building was a 5-storey educational block with various service buildings to the rear.  The campus was surrounded by residential properties on all sides.

Demolition Methodology

We carried out an initial soft-strip of the building to prepare for asbestos removal, which followed on systematically around the building.  Once the building had been cleared of asbestos and soft-stripped, it was demolished, initially using our high reach demolition excavator followed by standard demolition excavators at lower levels.  Site won demolition arisings were crushed to 6F2 standard product on site and used to backfill and level the site.

Environmental Issues

The site was adjacent to residential properties on all sides and, as such, dust, vibration and noise and dust were potential problems during the project.  We utilised dust boss machines and water hoses integrated on the excavator arm to suppress the dust arising from the demolition process.  Throughout the project we monitored noise and vibration at the site boundary using our own noise and vibration monitors.

Client Satisfaction

This was our second project for Manchester College, having completed two phases of demolition work at the Openshaw Campus earlier in the year.
