Walkden Shopping Centre
Location: Walkden, Manchester
Client: Derwent Development Management Ltd
Value: £800,000
Timescale: October 2025 to May 2026
Scope: The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of the former shopping centre.
Project Background
The project consisted of the demolition of the former shopping centre in Walkden town centre. The site consisted of several commercial properties forming a larger shopping complex with a central internal courtyard and service buildings to the rear. The site was surrounded the rest of the shopping centre which remained operational throughout the project.
Demolition Methodology
The buildings had an initial soft-strip to prepare them for asbestos removal which followed on systematically around the site. Upon completion of the asbestos removal and soft strip, mechanical demolition commenced and systematically worked through the buildings.
To facilitate the demolition of the tallest section of the building, which fronted the busy A6 High Street, a partial road narrows scheme was implemented for a week. This enabled our CAT High Reach Demolition Excavator to reduce the height of the building to a manageable level whereupon our standard demolition excavators were able to take over and completed the demolition. Hardcore material from the buildings was crushed to 6F2 standard product and used to backfill the basement with remaining material used in the redevelopment of the site.
Site Remediation
Once demolition had been completed, the site was handed back to the Principal Contractor to complete the transformation of the site into a public realm area.
