Viscom House, Gateshead

Location: Gateshead, Tyne & Wear
Client: ES Gateshead Ltd
Value: £150,000
Timescale: September 2024 to November 2024
Scope: The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of a former industrial unit on the banks of the River Tyne.

Project Background

The project consisted of the demolition of a former industrial unit adjacent to the River Tyne in Gateshead.  Due to close proximity of the building to the river, regular liaison with the Port of Tyne authority was essential to ensure our work did not impact on the river bank and surrounding environment.

Demolition Methodology

After the asbestos containing materials had been removed the building was stripped of all its fixtures, fittings and other waste that had been left from the last occupant of the building and also trespassers in the vacant years.  Following soft strip, the building was demolished carefully, leaving a substantial buffer zone between the building and the river to ensure no demolition debris would enter the River Tyne.  The resultant demolition arisings were crushed to 6F2 standard product and left in a stockpile in the middle of the site for use in the subsequent redevelopment of the site.
