Scope: The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of a former Leisure Centre and Library complex on a high school and primary school site.
The project consisted of the demolition of an existing leisure centre complex (two swimming pools, squash courts, sports’ hall, gymnasium, etc.) and community library on the site of Abraham Moss High School in Cheetham Hill. The adjacent high school would remain operational throughout the demolition project. The project also included the careful separation and removal of two high level link corridors that joined the school to the library.
The site was bordered by the Manchester Metrolink to one site, including a station and residential properties to all other sides.
The first task was to safely remove the asbestos containing materials from the buildings and to follow on with a thorough soft strip to prepare the buildings for demolition.
demolition was split on to two phases with the swimming pool section being demolished first. A split in the buildings allowed us to demolish this section safely whilst simultaneously soft-stripping the second section which included the Sports’ Hall and Library. The demolition was carried out with our high reach demolition excavator with a team of smaller demolition excavators working alongside processing the resultant material and grubbing up the slab and foundations.
The demolition arisings were crushed to 6F2 standard product and used to backfill the voids left by the swimming pool removal.
We were in regular liaison with the school management team and were able to react quickly when requests for “quiet times” were made, ceasing excavator work, but carrying on with quieter activities. We also ensured that there were no deliveries to site in the periods around school pick up and drop off times.
Environmental monitoring took place throughout the demolition phase with our own noise and vibration monitors and substantial dust suppression was used throughout the project.
