Civic Offices, Newcastle-under-Lyme

Location: Newcastle-under-Lyme
Client: Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council
Principal Contractor: Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd
Value: £1,400,000
Timescale: July 2021 to June 2022
Scope: The asbestos removal, soft-strip, demolition and site clearance of the former civic offices.

Project Background

The project consisted of the demolition of the former 4-storey Civic Centre offices in the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme.  The existing building was brick built with a flat roof and contained extensive asbestos throughout.  The structure was surrounded by commercial properties and town centre streets to all elevations.

Demolition Methodology

The offices had an initial soft-strip to prepare them for asbestos removal which followed on systematically around the building.  Once one “leg” of the building had been cleared of asbestos and soft-stripped, it was demolished using our high reach demolition excavator.  The remaining two legs of the building were demolished in a similar manner. Following the demolition of the superstructure, the extensive basement was demolished and the foundations grubbed up.  The demolition arisings were crushed to 6F2 standard product and left on site for use in the redevelopment of the site.

Environmental Issues

We utilised dust boss machines and water hoses integrated on the excavator arm to suppress the dust arising from the demolition process.  Throughout the project we monitored noise and vibration at the site boundary using our own noise and vibration monitors.
